The Construction Industry’s Mobile Devices Debate

mobile devicesWhich mobile device is best for the Industrial Construction Industry?

It shouldn’t come as a surprise to you that Apple’s IOS-based devices are the most used in North America. In fact, more and more tasks that previously were done on PCs are now done on mobile devices and tablets.

Although the Apple iOs remain the top mobile platform, Microsoft Windows 8 is gaining popularity.  According to the 2013 Constructech IT Playbook, Microsoft Windows 8 has even exceeded BlackBerry’s mobile popularity. According to the March 2013 Sage SMB Survey on Mobile Devices for the Construction Industry of the smartphones and tablets in usage, 30.3% use Android, 45.9% use Apple iOs, and 39.3% use Window’s operating system.

When it comes to choosing a device for business, which is best: construction-specific tablets or consumer tablets that come with business apps?  On one hand construction-specific tablets often are designed to work better out on the field because they are more durable.  However, many mobile devices are becoming better at offering business functionality, beyond just the regular apps you might expect.  In fact, AT&T offers Enhanced Push-to-Talk services on the iPhone 5 and iPhone 4S.  It comes with built-in Wi-Fi, and for the industrial construction industry this means workers will be able to have better coverage wherever they are and be able to better communicate with their team members.

One thing is certain, this debate will continue as tablets become more readily adopted in the industry.
